A hemp BJJ gi typically costs two to four times a comparable cotton gi, and even hemp brands' own sites say so. Before you pay that premium (or build a brand around it), it's worth separating what's genuinely true from what's just a good story.
What's Genuinely Good About Hemp
Let's be fair: hemp has real merits, and we're not here to pretend otherwise.
- Sustainable to grow. Hemp uses far less water than cotton (roughly a quarter) and needs little to no pesticide. That agricultural advantage is well documented.
- A strong fibre. Hemp fibre has higher tensile strength than cotton, and hemp fabric tends to "wear in" and soften with age rather than wear out.
- Less odour. Hemp manages moisture well, and a drier fabric gives odour-causing bacteria less to work with, so a hemp gi often does smell less over a hard session.
If sustainability is a core value for you and you love owning something niche, those are honest reasons to like hemp.
The Claims That Don't Hold Up
Here's where the marketing gets ahead of the evidence, and it's worth knowing before you pay for it.
- "Naturally antimicrobial, kills staph and ringworm." This is the big one. Independent textile scientists say there's no solid evidence that natural fibres like hemp are inherently antimicrobial, and any such effect is usually destroyed during processing. Much of the claim conflates the fibre with cannabinoids from a different part of the plant. Hemp's lower odour comes from moisture management, not from killing bacteria. Be very wary of any gi sold on "protects you from staph."
- "Unconditionally greener than cotton." Hemp is greener to grow, but life-cycle studies show the processing stage matters enormously, and some hemp processing can carry a higher manufacturing footprint than organic cotton. "More sustainable" is fair; "always greener end-to-end" is an over-claim.
- "3–4× stronger than cotton." Hemp is stronger, but the exact multiplier is marketing shorthand rather than a lab constant, and a gi is only as durable as its stitching, whatever the fabric.
- "Extremely soft." Eventually, yes. But hemp gis are notably stiff and rough when new and need several washes to break in, the opposite of soft on day one.
The Downsides Nobody Puts in the Ad
- Price. ~$220–$245 retail, roughly 2–4× a cotton gi, by the sellers' own admission.
- Stiff break-in. Rough and board-like at first; you're told to wash it 2–3 times before wearing just to stop it shedding.
- Fussy care and shrinkage. Cold wash, air dry, and size up for shrinkage, which can be uneven batch to batch.
- Heavy when wet. Hemp absorbs a lot of moisture and gets heavier and stiffer once soaked, which is not ideal in a hot, humid room.
- Barely any choice. A tiny handful of brands make hemp BJJ gis, with limited sizes, colours and cuts, and no mainstream fallback.
So, Is a Hemp Gi Worth It?
For a few people, yes. If sustainability is a genuine priority, you'll happily pay the premium, you want that distinctive dense feel, and you don't mind a break-in and careful washing, a hemp gi can be a great personal choice.
For most people, no. If you want a gi that's soft now, sized predictably, colour-fast, IBJJF-legal, available in the weave and colour you want, and priced sensibly, a well-made cotton gi wins on nearly every practical measure. And that's before you factor in the price gap.
